So first we bailout the banks, and now we are talking about bailing out the auto industry? I’m torn. I’d like to think that we can save all of these jobs in the auto industry, but is that possible? This article from Slate says that there should be a bailout because allowing them to go to bankruptcy would mean they would linger there forever. But it’s true — people would really suffer as a result. I was thinking cyclically earlier and wondering about our nation’s history to see where we are headed. We need to look at the factors of major economic catastrophes in our nation’s history to see what possibilities we have.

30s : today :: dust bowl migration : a possible rust belt migration? As our nation develops technologically, so too must our predictions for cultural shifts and radical events which reshape and drastically alter the state of our society. Events such as the Revolutionary War and the shift from colonization to democray; the Civil War and the surrounding Industrial Revolution; the Great Depression and World Wars I and II and the shaping of the modern era — are we due for another radical cycle?

What I’m trying to say is that perhaps what will happen is something akin to what happened in the 30s with the Dust Bowl era. Perhaps one or more of the automakers go out of business — but perhaps there is new technology or better opportunities elsewhere in the country? The Joads in the Dust Bowl era migrated westward because they heard there was work out Californee way; the rural sharecropper moved up from the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta to the factory floors of Chicago and other Midwestern cities — Detroit, Cleveland, etc. Let’s say GM and Chrysler go out of business, but a new green technology is booming in another part of the country, like Colorado or something — would we see a mass migration of citizens? Or perhaps when politicians say things like “we’re gonna make this old shutdown Maytag plant re-open as a solar panel factory” — can they really follow through on that? The potential for converting existing auto plants with a skilled manufacturing workforce into a company that can actually make environmentally and energy-saving products? That would be awesome.

It would also be neat to see someone like a consortium of Google and Warren Buffett buy GM and turn it into a company that was not a car company but a “transportation company.” They are General MOTORS, after all, and not General Cars. What other motors you guys got?

Whatever happens, this man should be involved.

I really must take advantage of this blog more often. There’s no reason I shouldn’t — it’s there, I’m here…why not? Raising two kids with both parents working is definitely the big challenge here lately, and I’ve felt so zapped and drained between kids and work that blogging is not high on the to-do list.

I’m looking at grad school because, well, what else do you do with a degree in Liberal Arts? Summer went by so quickly, I barely had a chance to enjoy it. Now all I can do is look out at the yard and see the few things I still have to do before I can declare it shut down for the winter. There’s a certain dread that fills the air when all of the leaves have fallen and the empty branches just scratch aimlessly at the sky — dread that I know that I probably won’t see warm sunshine for five more months. I think about the fun in the winter, but I also think about how much of a pain in the ass it is — the shovelling, the wet snow, the cold, the car getting stuck — all of these things are just no fun, but without them, I wouldn’t be reminded of how great the summer is.

It’s all about that balance, I’m finding. Just as we need good and bad things to happen in our lives, we need the seasons to remind us about the circular nature of life and of the universe. Without the bitter cold February mornings, how can we appreciate the warm sunshine on a late June afternoon? You can appreciate it, but when you have nice weather all the time, it just becomes par for the course and it makes you soft. Cold weather is good for you, which is why I could never live in any climate where it didn’t snow — it’s just in my Swedish blood.

Of course, I’m not about to move to where my dad grew up, south of Buffalo. They were just trying to emulate Sweden with their 30-foot snow drifts and “we had to dig a tunnel to the barn” stories. Screw that, I want AWD.

really? I still have this? Awesome.

the new house has the new garden, and today I tilled it up w/my new-to-me rototiller. I now have severely beaten hands; ouch.

I’ve got 24 tomato plants in the ground, and 6 broccoli as well. We had chives pop up from nowhere, and today I figured out what the other plant was: celery! We had no idea what it was but today I picked some and the scent was unmistakable.

I also have one jalapeno; I will most likely not be doing many hot peppers since I never use them, but with all of these tomatoes I just might have to grow some in order to make some salsa. Too bad I can’t grow cilantro for the life of me; otherwise I’d be all set.

Anyone have any luck with cilantro? Anyone out there?

I learned a few things this week. Two things about my garden:

1. Purple peppers are not growing NEARLY as big as they should be

2. I have not had any zucchini because what I thought was zucchini is really acorn squash! That explains A LOT.

One thing about school:

3. Pop Culture In America, a class I was lined up to take this fall, had a reading list a mile long and what appeared to be zero focus on any non-book cultural reference. I would have had to read Da Vinci Code, Sisterhood of the Ya-Ya-Travel Pants, Harry Potter and the First Book In The Series, and The Crappy Notebook. Whatever! There wasn’t even a graphic novel in the reading list. I don’t know how you can seriously discuss popular culture without even talking about comics. So instead, I signed up for a class on Genesis and also Myth and the Modern Age, which is almost entirely based on Joseph Campbell’s writings. Woo hoo! I’ve somehow become a sucker for this — why have I been ignoring it for so long? Perhaps I had to take a hero’s quest to find out that the answer was there all along. (note: make it stopppppppppppp)

Also, I have assembled my “go-bag,” which is something I’ve always had and gone back and forth with using, but after misplacing the last one I had (which wasn’t really a go-bag and was more of a carry-all), I buckled down and committed to finding a good one. I went to LL Bean and picked one out and equipped it with all I need. Apparently, photographing and showing off what you carry with you all the time is a popular internet meme and there are flickr groups devoted to it. Instead, I submitted a pic of my bag to one of my favorite sites, lifehacker.com for their ‘show us your…’ series. Usually it’s something like “show us your browser” or workspace, but this week was go-bags. I submitted mine and voila! It’s there. See the pic and my descriptions here. Mine is the only daddy-go-bag so far; just about everyone else is urban hipsters and/or students. Boo to that, I say.

4. Stuffed Zucchini is REALLY delicious:

Incredibly easy — it was ground turkey, quinoa, cherry tomatoes, onions, garlic, hot peppers, one of the biggest zucchinis ever (although not the biggest), pine nuts, mint, and spices. OMG so delicious. Here’s how:

1. Split zucchini in half, use spoon to scoop out the center. Salt, and pre-heat oven to 350.

2. make the quinoa, set aside

3. brown the ground turkey and throw in the spices: cinnamon, sage, a hint of cayenne, salt, pepper, and the coup de grace: freshly ground nutmeg (if you don’t have this, start doing it). It makes the biggest difference by adding a deep Moroccan or Mediterranean flavor to the dish

4. remove ground turkey from heat, set aside.

5. heat a little olive oil and sweat the onions, hot peppers, and garlic in the pan

6. roast zucchini halves in the oven with nothing in them for 15 min

7. slice cherry tomatoes in half

8. toss the quinoa, ground turkey, onions mix, and tomatoes. Stuff into zukes

9. roast for 15-20 min

10. enjoy!

This can be done with almost anything in the middle if you follow the quinoa/meat (or meat substitute)/onions/veggies route. SOOOOOOOOO good.

That’s right — Joseph Campbell’s “The Power of Myth” series from PBS. Interviewed by Bill Moyers at the Skywalker Ranch in California, Campbell spend the course of the last two years of his life telling this information to Moyers. . We watched one or two of the episodes in my class “The Mythic Journey” and I was enthralled with the interview on our “collective myths” and what makes us human.

I bought it with a gift certificate I got for my birthday. I am very excited to own it and look forward to watching it, piece by piece in the future.

It has a bonus interview with Lucas about the mythology of Star Wars. Yahoo!

seems like all I do on here is post about the garden. I need to schedule my time better and focus, man, focus!

Positives:

yellow squash are taking off — we’ve picked 3-4 so far and have about 8 or 9 lined up to go.

Purple Peppers finally are starting to flower and grow little peppers. Whatever was devouring them is gone now, so they have had time to recover. The tires are doing well.

Cherry tomatoes in the hanging basket are coming in first — probably because of all the sun and their small size.

Banana and cherry bomb peppers are coming in slowly but surely, picked a few of each so far.

tomatoes are doing okay. The grape tomatoes are going, but not as well as last year. The Roma tomatoes are really doing well in spots, and the Burpees are getting huge.

Cayennes and Thai hot peppers are developing nicely.

the basil has been very productive all season

same with the lettuce

the herb box is still going strong!

I have two pumpkins so far, and they’re already pretty big!

Negatives:

some of the tomato plants are continuing with the wilt. Nothing major and nothing fast — but slow and steady. I will have to dust again.

a handful of the Roma are developing a blossom rot or something on the bottoms of them — mostly these are on the innermost tomatoes, so I can only hope that it’s because they get very little sun and retain a lot of moisture. (looks like it’s blossom-end rot — which can be solved by adding calcium to the soil)

we accidentally let our cilantro and basil get sunburned during last week’s “heat wave” — they got very brown in spots and something’s been eating the basil. The cilantro still will not grow correctly no matter how much nipping of blossoms I do.

there are still squash bugs eating the squash and pumpkins, although it’s not as bad as last year. I still throw away about 1-2 yellow squash a week because of rotting on the ends.

I have one cucumber plant, which finally has few blossoms. I am not holding my breath on these.

I have one zucchini plant, which has yet to produce even as much as one small stump of a zuke, but it’s healthy and strong. I just waited way too long to plant it.

I planted the radishes too close together, and while some are developing OK, they have taken waaaaaaaaaaaay longer than they had been predicted to take. 21 days, my butt.

something’s eating the sweet potato leaves. I don’t know what, but something is.

The habanero looks like it’s drying up despite an adequate amount of water.

Next year we will hopefully be in our own house and have room for a real garden. My dream is to have a greenhouse built off the side of the basement and protruding halfway up the first floor, so I can really start growing things early on. I’d also love to have a root cellar & wine cellar underneath the kitchen, with access from a trap door in the kitchen floor. I looked up how to build a root cellar this week, and I think it’s definitely doable.

How to build a root cellar:

Step one: dig hole

Step two: cover

That’s it! Well, almost.

H and I have been talking about what house we’re looking for — the market is certainly going to be in our favor this fall/winter, so I look forward to being able to find a house that we like in a much lower price range than it was even a year ago. More bang for our buck, you know.

Well, we’ve had the Roomba for a little under a week, and the preliminary verdict is in: I love it. H was impressed with the amount of stuff it picked up in the first 3 days alone! She also thinks I love it too much, saying it has replaced my daughter. Pfft, whatever! Now it’s way more fun to vacuum, because I don’t have to do it! Genius!

This one has a scheduler so we can schedule it for the middle of the night, when we’re out, etc. This has been great — the house gets clean every day and with a little one learning to eat, the Roomba is almost as good as a dog. It flows seamlessly from linoleum to carpet, and picks up large amounts of dirt every single time.

There are some downsides, but not major enough to make me send it back. The roomba gets trapped on various objects from time to time, and you have to make sure the room has no loose rugs/mats or cords/wires hanging down. Twice we’ve been out, having scheduled the Roomba to do its thing while we’re gone, and twice we’ve come home only to find it helplessly trapped up on a kitchen rug. So we just start it up again and let it finish. The fact that I have to make sure the floor is clear everyday is also a minor inconvenience, but in a way, I like it because it forces me to pick up things on a daily basis and prevents clutter.

Overall, it’s awesome. I recommend everyone get one. Actually, in the future everyone WILL have one! It doesn’t replace our stand-up model for now because it can’t get all the crevices and corners as well as a hose attachment can, and sometimes it just misses things. But all in all, it’s a great invention that really gives me a huge peace of mind. I Knowing that the floors are clean all the time? Awesome. I can’t wait to see what the future will be like.

Woot is a great place to score some amazing deals on electronics as well as some oddities. It’s one item per day, launched at 1am EST, and they sell it till it’s out of stock. Today, they are having another woot-off, meaning they just keep selling things, one at a time, until that thing is gone and then it’s onto the next item. You can get some pretty nice deals out of this if you read up on reviews and know your prices beforehand.

That being said, this morning they offered something we’ve been wanting for a while: A Roomba! I always thought them to be frivolous or a novelty, but once we had a kid and I find myself picking Cheerios and vegetables off the floor on a regular basis…I was sold on the notion of having something keep the house clean automatically. The house should now have nice clean floors on a regular basis. I think this will also get me in the habit of picking up regularly so the Roomba (name TBD) can do its thing.

I think we got a good deal on this gizmo and with kids, I think it will free up time for us to do kid-things. Isn’t that what technology is supposed to do? Make our lives easier? We’ll see — this will be an interesting experiment w/a baby and a cat.

So I’ve discovered the source of my discontent in the garden — squash bugs. These lil critters look like this:

I’ve searched out the pumpkins and yellow squash for their eggs, and I’ve found quite a few. They look like tiny little orange/red dots on the underside of the leaves. I must have killed a city’s worth of these guys today. Hopefully I’ve been able to drastically reduce their numbers enough so the squash can live to see another day. I’m kind of kicking myself because I meant to grow butternut squash this summer for this exact reason: they are strongly resistant to pests such as the squash bug. But this spring, I had forgotten that piece of information and only remembered that I had to powder the tomato plants around my birthday to prevent mass horned tomato worm infestation.

The solution to the squash bugs, besides crrrrrrrrushing their eggs, is some stuff called Red Devil or Natural Guard. Well, that’s the organic solution, as it uses a fairly organic means to eliminate these guys. Today I cut one of them open with my pocketknife and made him pay. That was only moderately satisfying.

The internet has been a great help to me in finding resources for gardening; I also was wondering why some of my tomato plants were wilting on the bottom leaves. A phone call to my dad revealed that I needed to cut the wilting leaves off right away– there was an infestation of some sort. The weirdest thing was, I couldn’t see anything at all!

Thank you, interwow: Tomato Russet Mites. So small, you need a 14X magnifier to see them! Good thing I cut them off, now I think my one or two affected plants will be okay. Still, I’m going to get some wettable sulfur in order to properly eliminate them.

This season has been much more about educating myself with pest than it has with the simple fact of growing things. I’ve found quite a few slugs among the radishes and I found one in the lettuce today. I need some skunky, cheap beer to get them to die. I also saw some odd worm munching on one of my habanero plant — it was very green on the outside and even greener on the inside. I don’t think it was a horned tomato worm, because I didn’t think they liked peppers. Still, I’ll be on the lookout and launch a preemptive shock-and-awe strike on them this summer.

Japanese Beetles are a pain — I was changing the trap bags this morning (which has become part of my Monday routine) and I remember how much this reminds me of my childhood. Well, Japanese Beetles, that is. My dad would always have to put traps up because they would just decimate our chestnut trees similar to Biblical locusts. K-ren, my youngest sister, was about 4 or 5 when she called them “Japaneetle Bees,” and the name has stuck in our family ever since. The Japaneetle Bees (which is a great band name, btw) have ravaged the wild grapes around the property, and had been munching on the peppers, the tomatoes, and the basil — although they haven’t gotten any of these too badly. I attribute this to the traps.

By the end of a week, the traps turn into a hanging bag of death, and I know I have to change them when more flies are on the outside than JBs. Still, it hasn’t been too bad this year — I think the wild grapes are holding them off.

Tonight we had a salad with homegrown lettuce — delicious as always. Did I mention that last Friday, Lidz and I picked wild blackberries from across the street? It’s true — we did. She absolutely loved them.

By the way, those bugs at the top of this post? Mating. Bet you weren’t planning on having to see bug sex this morning. Looks like you all got punk’d!

Yeah, I really do. Here’s some good updates:

Garden: the garden so far has a grade of a B. I’m not totally thrilled like I was last year, so maybe the novelty has worn off, but I’m also kind of disappointed by the outputs. The tomatoes are doing well except the Japanese Beetles, the bane of my existence, are loving to eat the leaves. The weaker plants have stopped being sickly looking and, while smaller, are actually producing tomatoes before the bigger plants. The peppers are doing okay, but not awesome. Something is eating the leaves on my purple bell peppers, which I cannot find. I’ve been spraying them with organic soap stuff, and it’s working on everything else but those are still getting chewed up a bit. The mystery squash turned out to be yellow squash, which I’m glad of because they’re easier to use and grow than acorn or butternut. I have about 3 of them so far with more to come.

The cucumbers suck and are just not growing. Well, maybe one or two are. The zucchini are so-so, we’ll see how they come out. Pumpkins are growing so they’ll do well. I don’t think I gave the radishes enough room because I had no idea that they would all actually sprout, so I’ve been thinning them out little by little.

The herbs are doing really well — we have so much basil that looks so healthy! However, this week I’ve been finding a few leaves that look like they’ve been eaten, so now I have another mystery to solve. Crap. Cilantro in its own planter is doing really well, but sharing w/parsley is not helping it.

The mint was great — we made mojitos on Tuesday night and watched the All-Star game and there’s plenty of mint left. The lettuce has also been good for one batch of salad and we’ll be ready for another batch <strike>tomorrow</strike> today — that makes us a big salad about once a week, which is a really nice perk. Once I have land, I will definitely be planting a good-sized lettuce patch.

We went to a Wilco concert at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont the other weekend and it was Lidia’s first concert. The sunset behind the band made for an absolutely beautiful backdrop for a gorgeous show — I’ve seen them eight times now and they never disappoint. Ever. They were fun, loose, tight, together, and above all, they put on a great family-friendly show. There were soooooo many kids at the concert and the setting was perfect.

I bought the book Buy Buy Baby this past week and I need to start getting into it ASAP. Oddly enough, I had to buy it, but I think that makes sense as marketing to the under 3 set is something that really bothers me. I am a very bad consumer and I need to stop consuming, so I am going to try and break this because what good is it, really? And what kind of example am I setting?

I think that there’s something to be said about getting back to the land; but not necessarily like that. I think that we can use a good combination of neo-Luddite attitudes with some awesome technology thrown in. I do enjoy modern conveniences, but I’m seriously thinking about lobbying to get rid of TV. What’s on that’s so important that the internet or DVDs can’t provide? I’ll do it as soon as the Red Sox season is over, I swear.

We’re trying to save for a house, but consumption isn’t really helping, you know? I need to figure out a way to get our electric bill down, it’s insane. I need to get on a budget, for real.

Having a kid who is suddenly soaking up everything you do and say really makes you stop and think about what you do and say. What kind of person are you molding? How will they develop and grow, and how much of that is a result of what you’re impressing on them? All things that I need to remind myself and think about.

In the meantime, make a panflute out of tampons.

There’s no love like shoe love. And I LOVE these shoes.

I got a gift certificate for Father’s Day from my mom & dad to LL Bean, and these were at the top of my list after seeing my sister Luis wearing a pair.

—

The summer heat beats down upon your brow as you head back to the cottage after a long day of foraging for shells and sea urchins along the rocky Maine seashore. Sweat trickles down your neck, tickling the small of your back. The office is a million miles away as you take a whiff of the briny smell of the ocean, reminding you of clambakes and lobsterfests in the waning evenings of your youth. You can’t wait to get back to shore, kick back in an Adirondack chair and feel the salty wood splinter into your backside as you pop the top on a frosty beer you picked up at the local market. The late afternoon sun is sheer torture on your sunburned arms and legs, but your feet are being carried by the four winds themselves as you bound back up the rocks in your LL Bean Summer Sneakers. Breathable, ultra-lightweight and impeccably stylish, your summer days are captured in the soles of these shoes — but not your sweat. You wince as she places a wispy hand upon your blistered shoulder. “You look hot — are you alright?” she asks. “Never been better,” you reply. “I’m walking on air.”

The Summer Sneaker from LL Bean. Priced right at $34.50 for men, $29.50 for women.

–

Okay, but seriously, these shoes are amazing. Easy on/easy off, ready to wear without socks (and I hate wearing shoes without socks, even ankle socks bug me), these things are so comfortable.

There’s so much! Where to begin? Garden is going, work is work, and kids is kids.

Been very busy between work, school, and the lil one. She definitely keeps me busy!

How about the wrap-up:

Garden:

90% of things are taking well. The peppers are fine (with some little peppers already), the herbs are all very healthy (and a very delicious addition to many dishes, especially breakfast). The seeds I planted are doing pretty good, although some bugs are eating them so I’ve been looking up methods to kill them. I think wood ash (which I have plenty of) and/or vinegar sprayed on the plants will get rid of the bugs.

The lettuce is surprising me. I wasn’t sure on it when I planted them, but it has turned out to have some really strong leaves. We should be eating some salad from them this week, and within a month, be able to pick about 3 times a week.

The tomatoes are 50/50. Two of the better boys are doing great — these are the ones that got fresh, new soil in new pots. The one that’s in a pot from last year with old soil is by far much weaker. The three that are together are doing okay, but not as good as the two on their own. The Roma tomatoes look kind of weak — again, in soil from last year — and the olive tomatoes that are in a pot are iffy. The olive tomatoes in a hanging basket are doing well. I think I’ll probably remedy this with a lot of Miracle Gro on the old soil plants to allow them some additional nutrients.

The flowers are doing wonderfully. The marigolds are just blooming and the petunias are still going strong.

Work:

I went to Portland, ME on Tuesday and Augusta on Wednesday. Luckily I can just stay up there, but it still sucks. Being away from home sucks, I miss Lidz.

It’s the end of the quarter, which means I’m behind on calibrations as always. Not a big deal, but I found out that next quarter, I have to actually go along with the quarter calendar and not by the month. Boo-urns.

I still have 6 bakers to see by the end of the week. Will it happen? No way! Not with a Wilco concert on Friday and a wedding on Saturday. Hoodoggie no way.

Life:

When I was six years old, I had my pictures taken at Olan Mills. Never in a million years would I imagine that someday, I’d take my own child to do the same. Today we took Lidz to get her 1 year professional pics taken. She did okay, but she was more interested in trying not to stand and trying to get the camera than she was in smiling. She did smile big on a few, but had a much more serious look on most of them, which is puzzling since that’s not how she acts normally.

Saturday night was the 2nd meeting of the Upper Valley Wine Tasting Club, which is really more of an excuse to have some people get together and drink and try out some wines. I think it serves a great purpose because everyone gets to try something different and take notes as to what they like so they can make better selections in the future, and the socializing is great. We had an awesome time at our friends’ house, and there were about 12-14 people there. Good turnout! I think we’ll try to have the next one at our place.

School is school; I had the mythology class on Saturday and we watched Bill Moyers interview Joseph Campbell, as predicted. Onda was not mentioned.

So that’s pretty much what’s been going on. The tent stayed up until just the other day, because every time it would dry out, it would rain again and then we’d need it to dry out. Finally, on Thursday it blew away and ended up in the neighbor’s yard, so I dragged it back and finally got it dried out this afternoon after having it hanging in the garage for 3 days.

We wanted to go out to dinner tonight since Lidz was all dressed up, but instead we went to the market down the street and got some chicken sausages and pork chops and we grilled. We made a delicious dijon sauce for the pork:

1/4 c dijon mustard

1 Tbsp molasses

2 tsp lemon juice

2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1/2 tsp cayenne

few dashes of Tabasco

That’s it! Blend, brush on the pork (which you’ve salted), and grill. They came out delicious. We also grilled corn, which Lidz loved. I still need to get another grill grate as we’re down to one since the other one rusted and the “universal” grids don’t fit. Son of a…..! Lidz also finished off the blueberry ice cream from her birthday, she wanted more and more and more.

Wilco on Friday!!

I still hate ants.

Well, I finally got some time to get things planted in the garden. I didn’t want to go bigger than last year, but I ended up having to get 5 more pots because I didn’t want to crowd anything like last year. Here’s my mistakes from last year:

overcrowding (4 grape tomato plants in one pot, 4 big pepper plants in a medium pot)

no tomato stakes — sticks & twine don’t work

not spraying for tomato worms

not catching the things that ate the zukes

So far, I didn’t have much luck sprouting anything except a few pumpkins and squash — none of the zukes or one of the other kind of squash came up. I planted the pumpkins and whichever squash this is — I honestly have no idea. Butternut? Buttercup? Acorn? We’ll see.

I bought a bunch of plants at Longacres in Lebanon:

Tomatoes:

Better Boy tomatoes (6) — planted 3 in their own M size pot, and 3 in a L pot

Olive (Grape) tomatoes (4) — 2 in a large pot, 2 in a hanging basket. This will be an interesting competition.

Roma (4), 2 to a large pot (New this year!)

Peppers:

Habenero (same pot as last year — tiny)

Cherry Bomb & Banana (NEW) (sharing a M pot)

Thai hots and Cayenne (each in their own S pot)

purple bell peppers, planted 2 to a tire, as seen above (NEW).

Herbs:

peppermint

basil (4) — it looked really fresh so I’m hoping to get a good crop from this

Cilantro (4) — try this again this year

Chives & Parsley are STILL going strong — using the same plants that survived all winter indoors

Lettuce: I have 6 mesculin mix plants in 2 pots on the stoop. I am eager to see if I can grow our own salad!

I also planted cukes, zukes and radish seeds in the ground to see what would happen. The radishes have already poked through, and it’s only been 4 days. They should be ready in about 3-4 weeks.

So, it’ll be a productive and busy season in the garden again, but hopefully I learned enough from last year (like, get tomato cages on early — check) that this year’s will be more rewarding.

Sooooo……I’m moving a bulk of what I’m actually thinking over to tumblr.com because it’s all about the stream-of-consciousness thinking. That way, you can also see the things I’m reading on the feed reader (google reader, which, if you don’t already use, you should). You can add the tumblr to your RSS feed reader and get updates on the fly. This will incorporate both my thoughts and things I find interesting from around teh web.

Cool? cool.

Edit: I are dumb. My tumblr is located at jasperco.tumblr.com

I’ve been selected to go on to the Jeopardy! second round of testing at the auditions in May. Yes! I took the online test a while back and did very well (with some help from H) and now I’m moving on to the second 50-answer test and a mock version of the game.

I need to bring with me 5 “interesting tidbits about myself.” You know the kind — the ones they tell on the beginning of the show. Seeing as how I don’t collect antique bedpans or something stupid like that, I need some stories. Got any about me?

THANKS
