Danger in the Garden August 3, 2006

Filed under: garden — tim @ 12:22 am

So the heat has not been the only dangerous thing in the garden…it’s the use of super-awesome Miracle Gro soil! The potted Husky Reds are getting so heavy that this morning one of the biggest branches on one of them completely collapsed and broke under its own weight. I spent about 20 minutes trying to reattach the branch with twine in a binding (and them somewhat secured with duct tape), and while I got it to hold okay, I’m not sure it will make it or not. I really hope so, because there are some seriously big tomatoes on those branches!

I’ve learned my lesson and next year will have tomato cages with more support from the get-go. Needless to say I have already secured the tomato that didn’t break.

One of my pumpkin plants has gone all the way from one end of the house to the other, and one has found its way up into a tree, and now I have pumpkins in the bushes, about chest high. We’ll see how this pans out.
